Claflin University

Claflin University is a historically black college located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Founded in 1869, Claflin is the oldest historically black college in the state and the first in the world to grant degrees to African American students. The university offers a variety of academic programs and extracurricular activities, including a robust sports program. Claflin University’s sports teams are known as the Panthers and compete in the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Panthers field teams in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, and track and field. The university also has a cheerleading squad and a dance team. Claflin’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have been particularly successful, with the men’s team winning the CIAA championship in 2018 and the women’s team winning the championship in 2019. The Panthers’ baseball team has also had a great deal of success, winning the CIAA championship in both 2017 and 2018. Claflin University also offers a variety of intramural sports for students. These include basketball, flag football, softball, soccer, and volleyball. The university also has a fitness center and a swimming pool, both of which are open to students. Claflin University is committed to providing its students with a well-rounded college experience, and its sports program is an important part of that experience. The Panthers’ teams have had a great deal of success in recent years, and the university’s intramural sports provide students with an opportunity to stay active and have fun.
