Savannah State University (SSU) is a public, historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. Founded in 1890, SSU is the oldest public historically black college in the state and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city. With a student population of around 3,500, SSU offers a wide range of degree programs, including business, engineering, education, and the sciences. In addition to its academic programs, SSU is also known for its athletic programs. The university is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). SSU’s athletic teams, known as the Tigers, compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field. The university also has a cheerleading squad and a dance team. The SSU football team has enjoyed recent success, winning the MEAC Championship in 2018 and 2019. The basketball team has also had some success, making the NCAA Tournament in 2021. SSU’s baseball team has had some success as well, winning the MEAC Championship in 2021. The university also has a number of other sports programs, including swimming, volleyball, and wrestling. SSU also has a strong intramural sports program, which offers a variety of sports and activities for students to participate in.
