Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a private university located in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1911, SMU is one of the oldest universities in the state and is known for its rigorous academics and strong athletics programs. SMU is a member of the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference and fields 17 varsity sports teams. The school’s most successful program is men’s basketball, which has won two conference championships and made two Final Four appearances. The men’s basketball team is currently coached by Tim Jankovich and plays its home games at Moody Coliseum. The SMU Mustangs football team is another popular program at the university. The team is currently coached by Sonny Dykes and plays its home games at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The Mustangs have won two conference championships and have appeared in seven bowl games. The school also has a strong tradition of success in women’s sports, with the women’s basketball team winning four conference championships and the women’s soccer team winning two conference championships. SMU is also home to the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top college football running back. The award is named after Doak Walker, an SMU alumnus and Heisman Trophy winner.
